Comb Binding Guide for Offices and Print Shops

Comb binding — also called plastic comb or Cerlox binding — is the most affordable document finishing method for in-house office work and budget print-shop jobs. A comb opener spreads pre-formed plastic spines while punched sheets drop onto the teeth; closing the spine locks pages in place. The result opens flat for photocopying and lays reasonably well on a desk, which is why schools, colleges and small offices across India still choose comb binding for reports, project submissions and training manuals.

Comb size must match punched sheet thickness. Each spine diameter — from 6 mm for thin pamphlets to 51 mm for thick catalogues — accepts a specific sheet count. Use the standard 19-ring pattern for US letter and many A4 punches, or 21-ring for European A4 machines. Undersized combs buckle pages; oversized combs look loose and pages shift.
